Game Week: West Virginia

Hope y’all had a great Thanksgiving! With that being said, it’s time to close this football season out at home.

West Virginia enters this game much less scary of a threat than they were a week ago following the broken hand of quarterback Will Grier and the home loss to Texas. Grier fuels this offense; as he goes, so do the Mountaineers. Previously, the Mountaineers could have presented a serious challenge for OU with the Sooners perhaps looking ahead to the Big 12 Championship rematch against TCU.

Now? I’m not too worried.

For starters, the extent of Baker Mayfield’s punishment won’t be too extreme. I’d be stunned if it was longer than a drive or two. Even if Lincoln Riley holds Mayfield out longer than expected, the offense is in the capable hands of Kyler Murray. While being nowhere near a 1-to-1 replacement to Baker, Murray is an exciting player who has shown signs of being a big time player next season.

Who are the Mountaineers?

These guys have always been chippy towards the Sooners, which I’ve always found to be kinda odd. They are nowhere near the State of Oklahoma, haven’t beaten OU since joining the Big 12 and rarely are in the conference title picture.

Last Time We Met: November 19th, 2016 in Morgantown. OU 56, WVU 28

Not gonna lie, I had a friends 21st birthday party on this night so all I really remember is being drunk and watching OU rack up a ton of touchdowns in the snow. Baker and Dede tore up the Mountaineers for lots of points and yards, because this team really honestly blows.

Why You Should Care:

This is the last home game for Baker Mayfield. I think that might be all I need to say. It’s going to get dusty up in Memorial Stadium.
